York Liberty is a student-run society at the University of York, pushing for greater accountability and transparency on campus, while also campaigning for the protection of freedom of expression.
Our membership consists of students from across the political spectrum, with varying degrees of experience in political activism. Some of us have been active within student politics for years, while others among our ranks are fairly new to the game. We hope we’re a welcoming bunch, as we seek to be as inclusive and diverse as possible.
There are two things we should clear up about York Liberty:
Firstly, York Liberty is not a national campaign group. Though several of our members are interested in nationwide issues such as the freedom of the press, democracy and public accountability, York Liberty exists as a body based at the University of York. We will concentrate our efforts on campus life. Any student at the University of York is welcome to get involved.
Secondly, York Liberty is not an anti-YUSU group. Over the year it has become increasingly hard to work with the students’ union and some feel the union is detached from the student body. As a result, it has been difficult to hold the union to account. York Liberty was founded with the goal of rectifying this, and achieving a more open relationship between students and their union. However, we do not exist to make the University of York Students’ Union’s life as difficult as possible. On the contrary, we hope to work with the students’ union wherever possible. We are delighted to have discussed ideas with the 2016/2017 President and we hope that collaboration will continue in future. Ultimately, we hope to start a debate around the way in which the students’ union operates and come to a conclusion that brings students and the union together and works in the interests of everyone.
